Utah law mandates that all drivers have automobile insurance. More specifically, Utah law requires that you carry a minimum of $25,000.00 bodily injury coverage per person, $65,000.00 minimum per accident, and $15,000 minimum for property damage. Failure to not have automobile insurance is a Class B Misdemeanor and comes with a fine of at least $400.00. Moreover, the Utah Department of Public Safety is required to suspend your driver’s license.

According to InsuranceJournal.com, in 2015, roughly 13% of the drivers on US roads do not have insurance despite the preceding. Uninsured drivers equate to approximately one out of every eight vehicles. That is a troubling statistic. What happens if you are one of the unfortunate auto accident victims hit by a driver who does not have insurance? If you are injured by an uninsured driver and are at fault for the accident, your recourse will be to claim your uninsured policy. If you do not have this coverage, you will be responsible for addressing the costs without recourse against an automobile insurance company.

Understanding Uninsured Motorist Accidents

What exactly is an uninsured policy, or rather uninsured motorist coverage (UM)? This is a specific portion of your system that comes into play when you are hit by a driver who does not have insurance. This policy will also be utilized if a hit and run driver injures you. Uninsured policies can address medical bills, pain, and suffering, funeral costs, and lost income. However, if you are to make an insured claim, this can impact (and most likely will) your insurance premiums. After all, even though the accident is not your fault, you are claiming your own insurance company.

What can you do About a Car Crash?

Utah law does not require you to carry uninsured motorist coverage. That said, if you are injured and need assistance, you will be grateful you can make an uninsured claim. It is your protection against those individuals who do not have insurance coverage. Be sure to communicate with your insurance agent that you want uninsured (and on a different topic, underinsured) motorist coverage. Many people will waive their uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage in an attempt to save a little bit of money. As an added layer of protection, Utah law requires that a waiver of these policies be done in writing.

Various types of car insurance

If you have a driver’s license and own a vehicle, you will probably be familiar with various insurance coverages. Most people have heard of minimum coverage or “liability” coverage versus full coverage, which covers a broader range of situations. As the names imply, liability insurance will only cover the other driver and their property should the accident be deemed your fault. This is the minimum insurance coverage the is legally necessary to operate a vehicle in most cases. The full range would offer protection even if the accident were deemed your fault. It also covers essential items like theft, natural disasters, animal collisions, and even falling objects that can cause small to considerable damage to cars, trucks, and motorcycles.

What to do if the driver does not have insurance?

Unfortunately, not everyone on the road has full coverage insurance, and in some cases, no insurance at all. You can protect yourself from these situations by increasing your underinsured or uninsured motorist protection on your car insurance policy. This will significantly help your ability to seek compensation should the driver have little recourse to make things right personally. These insurance policies will also be of great assistance should the other driver flea the accident scene.

To recognize the differences between without insurance and underinsured motorist insurance coverage, you need to be generally aware of the subject of car insurance coverage overall. Nearly every state in the country requires a specific running a motor vehicle to acquire automobile insurance. Many states allow the driver to select whether they desire insurance to cover their car in the case of a collision.

On the other hand, most states need cars and truck driving when driving have a minimum quantity of insurance coverage to cover property damage and physical injury caused to various other vehicles and vehicle drivers. Some states set minimal needs for such liability coverage.

Whether the state mandates the amount or the chauffeur purchasing, the automobiles select a quantity. If a mishap happens, the at-fault car’s insurance coverage only covers the accident’s problems approximately the details quantity of the insurance coverage acquired. The maximum amount that the cars and truck insurance company will pay to a private or various individuals injured in a single accident is called the plan limitations or the limits of liability.
